Old Money, the timeless chic

Old money fashion, the style that has stood the test of time, is a reversal of the 2010 new money trend. Rather than being constricted to mere fashion, old money is a lifestyle that shows up in clothes, hobbies, decor and ones' air in general. Now you don't necessarily need to drop your monthly salary on designer accessories or clothing, it is just the matter of cultivating the correct wardrobe by choosing neutral colors and classic timeless pieces.

All that matters in old money is your unique way of putting an outfit together, it could be throwing on an oversized sweatshirt with biker shorts like Princess Di did or throwing on a blazer to upgrade a basic jeans and shirt ensemble.

One may wonder, why exactly is it that one may consider opting for the old money fashion, the answer is easy enough- such clothing is the prime example of prestige, elegance and of the elite in a perfect blend with simplicity; one may even say that such fashion whispers wealth and not scream it. Personally, I believe that even if one prefers statement pieces over timeless ones, even then owning a few basic classic pieces is essential for one's wardrobe.

So now, how do we cultivate a wardrobe that gives the impression of wealth and sophistication? Our main goal is to make a statement without being too flashy. Take a look around and notice how the people around you dress. Not many would stand out, it is the same crowd of graphic prints, jeans, t-shirts and baggy pants all around. There is nothing wrong with such clothing of course, but if you want your aesthetic to be old money some of these outfits may not be the way to go. Old money fashion is a blend of practicality and elegance. As I said before, it is not necessary to spend all your money on designer pieces but adding a few accessories from high-end brands is always a good thing. When building up a timeless wardrobe keep in mind that neutral colors are always the way to go. Coats are a valuable investment, so are cardigans, blazers, jumpers, trousers, shirts, miniskirts and a good collection of stockings. As far as shoes are concerned, oxford loafers, formal sneakers, pumps and high heeled boots always are a good choice.

There are certain brands that the rich and elite shop from for their wardrobe, so if you are looking to expand your wardrobe you may want to check these out:

  • Ralph Lauren, its, of course, known for its old money collections.

  • Jill Sander- minimalist fashion for both men and women.
