The Femme Fatale

A femme fatale is an attractive and seductive woman, especially one who is likely to cause distress or disaster to a man who becomes involved with her. The term originates from the French phrase “femme fatale”, which means ‘deadly woman’ or 'lethal woman’. The character of a femme fatale is typically villainous or at least morally ambiguous and always associated with a sense of mystification and unease. The origins of the femme fatale date back to noir films of the 1940s, in which the woman would use her sexuality in ways that were incredibly radical for the time period. Common noir plots include these women cheating on and even murdering their husbands, many of whom were abusive.

Being a femme fatale is in no way just a sense of style. Your appearance and wardrobe are a huge part of it, yes, but that is not all that there is to it. It is an overall development of looks and personality.

Channeling dark femininity, wit, and seduction, the key to the aesthetic is mystery with a hint of danger. This translates beautifully into the modern woman's wardrobe. I personally feel that a woman will be better off being a femme fatale than sticking to the norms of what she is supposed to be. I love the idea of soft femininity, but nowadays it just gets trampled as women only get hurt in return for their softness. Almost every man's ideal woman is soft and nurturing but doesn't femininity need safety in order to prevail? Being soft and kind is no longer a strength that is valued, but it is still a strength, possessed by a precious few.

You don't need to change who you are in order to protect yourself; you just need to decide who is worthy enough to know the true you. And the rest of them? All you need is a villainous aura and appearance to keep them at bay.

God knows how fun it is to scroll through femme fatale outfit ideas on Pinterest, but what essentials do you need to have in your wardrobe to perfect the aesthetic? Saint Laurent and Versace are the paragon of dark femininity, if one needs inspiration, they are the one to look at.

The femme fatale always looks in control of her own feelings and of those around her. She is someone moves with leisure. The key to all of it is a confidence in yourself and being well in touch with your feminine side. As far as the wardrobe is concerned, the femme fatale never reveals too much. Ranging from power suits to satin dresses and floor length gowns, the wardrobe of a femme fatale is never for the male gaze.
